GORILLA TOUR IN CONGO
Whoever can sustain a several hours trekking in the rain tropical forest. Virunga National Park with 7.800 sq km is an immense protected area along the border between Congo and Uganda.
It is named after the eight volcanoes mountains located within its Southern territory, of which the Niyragongo and Nyamulagira are still active volcanoes. The Park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which comprises three contiguous national parks: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in Rwanda and Virunga in Congo.
In 1979 the Park was designated as World Heritage Site and become well known for the mountains gorillas tracking activities. There are at the moment 6 habituated families of mountains gorillas.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Kisoro. After breakfast, leave Kampala Southward to reach Kisoro. Stop over at the Equator for a photograph. Then you drive through the Ankole region, where you see the typical Ankole cattle, coffee plantations and the different vegetations of Uganda, up to the terraced and cultivated hills of the Kigezi region, best known as the “Switzerland of Africa”.
Lunch en route. Kisoro is located within the area of the rain tropical forests at the borders between Uganda, Congo and Rwanda, at the foothills of Muhavura and other Volcanoes. Dinner and overnight at Kisoro Tourist Hotel.
Day 2: Gorilla tracking. Early morning departure for the mountain gorilla tracking in Virunga National Park in Congo. After the briefing from the authorities of the park, set off for the trekking into the rain tropical forest searching for the habituated gorilla family.
You remain close to the beautiful primates for over one hour, for observation and photography. Make sure you carry with you packed lunch and water. After tracking go back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight at Kisoro Tourist Hotel or, in alternative, drive to Lake Bunyonyi and spend the night at Arcadia Cottages.
Day 3: Kampala. After breakfast drive back to Kampala. Lunch en route.
