GORILLA TRACKING IN AFRICA
Africa
30, 2005)–A combination of natural and man-made threats is killing gorillas and chimpanzees in Central Africa, and experts say $30 million is needed for special programs to save some of mankind’s closest relatives from disappearing.
The African countries that are the gorillas’ home are doing the best they can to protect them, but these efforts are hampered by financial constraints and pressing developmental problems.
Unfortunately, these animals, native to the equatorial regions of Africa, are diminishingin number due, in part, to illegal hunting and advancing civilization. Hunting and poaching are the leading threats to gorilla populations throughout Africa. All in the FamilyThe vast forests that cover the Virunga Mountains straddling the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and Zaire in Africa are home to thousands of species of animals.
Gorilla Endangered The gorilla is a shy and, for the most part, inoffensive vegetarian — a far cry fromthe fearsome, aggressive creature depicted in films and comic books. For gorillas, this most commonly means comparing the amount of difference between western and eastern gorillas relative to that between common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and pygmy chimpanzees, or bonobos (Pan paniscus).

Some of the recent discussion of revising gorilla taxonomy has been motivated by results from studies examining the amount of genetic distance between gorilla populations. Gorillas are sometimes caught in snares set for smaller animals and die of infected wounds. Since chimps and bonobos are considered different species, it was suggested that perhaps we should recognize two species of gorillas.
If eastern and western gorillas have experienced much more recent gene flow than have chimpanzees and bonobos, then either the initial split between these gorillas occurred more recently than the chimp/bonobo split, or there has been periodic gene flow between western and eastern gorillas during the last 2 million years or so.
