Uganda is a small country on the edge of Lake Victoria, and boarders Kenya, to the east, Sudan, to the north and Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. Known as The Pearl of Africa, it’s an extremely lush and green country.

Tips for the Tracker of Gorillas

The Ugandan people are very friendly and always on hand to help, but you need to be aware that nothing gets done quickly in this country – no one is in any particular hurry. My destination, The Impenetrable Forest covers approximately 331 sq km and is home to over half the world’s population of mountain gorillas.

It is situated in a small pocket in the Virunga mountain range, located in south west Uganda on the border of The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. I travelled to Bwindi, in our 4WD from my home in Kampala where I had been living for the past three and a half years with my family.

Gorilla management

We moved there because of work. Uganda is the third country I had lived in and I was looking forward to exploring it. I’d already travelled throughout Uganda and visited many of the forests and safari parks, but had yet to see Uganda’s famous Mountain Gorillas – one of the things I’d most been looking forward to.

In order to visit the gorillas you need a special permit, which can only be issue by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority. You can either apply to them directly or through a tour operator.

Either way it can take between three and six months to actually receive your permit and be allowed to go, as only six people are allowed to visit the gorillas per day. Each permit costs  USD 500.
